QUESTION:
Does yamaha make a fretless bass?
I am looking for a cheap but quality fretless bass guitar and i seem to like yamaha. I cant seem to find out if they make a fretles or not. if so, what is the model, and were can i find one?

				ANSWER:
Hey Mark:

I am not sure if the bass on Ebay is still in production. Most of what ive seen on Yamaha's site for fretless basses is around 499 for current production models.

Here is a link for the RBX 260F on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/WOW-Yamaha-RBX260F-Fretless-Electric-Bass-Guitar_W0QQitemZ390055989135QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item5ad1260f8f&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A2102|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

That particular model is used, and personally, at an opening bid of 149, I would not be inclined to go more than 20 bucks higher for that bass. Especially with having to pay for shipping.

The bridge on that bass is VERY poor, and its also one of Yamah'a very cheap models. I have played the fretted version of that bass years ago, and the pick-ups were very weak, and not a lot of tone was available with that bass.

I'm going to enclose a link for an Ibanez fretless, and at 299, this is a GREAT entry level fretless that will last a long time, plus, be "stage-worthy" if your playing in a band.
Here's the link:

http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-IBA-SR300F-PW

As with all the SR series basses by Ibanez, this has a super fast and easy playing neck. The bridge on this bass is very good, plus, the guitar stays in tune real well, unlike the RBX260F. Pickups on the Ibanez are very good, and there's alot of eq flexibility too.

I have played the fretted and fretless models of the Ibanez, and the build quality, fit and finish, and how well each bass played was very consistent.

Hope this has helped, and congrats on going fretless!

Frequently Asked Questions

			QUESTION:
Your guitar wishlist?
Hey, bassists and guitarists. I'm curious which guitars/basses would you ask for, or perhaps have in mind to get eventually. You can name as many as you want (as guitar lovers, we would like dozens of them; still, let's try not to surpass 20 to be more realistic... lol), with any price (could be a cheap one if you think you should get THAT guitar too). It can be only guitars, only basses or both.

Oh, and perhaps you wanna share which ones you have already, just to get to know your current arsenal (and make me jealous in the process).

I have a modest collection of two: a MIM '10 Fender Standard Jazz Bass and a '10 Epiphone G400 guitar.

My wishlist would be (so far):
BASS
- Musicman Sterling Ray
- Fender Highway Jazz Bass
- 5 string bass (Ibanez SR5005 or Fender Jazz)
- Fretless bass (a Fender Jazz or Precision)
- Ibanez SR800
- Steinberger XS-15FPA Custom
- Kramer D-1

GUITAR
- Gibson SG Standard, Special or Angus Young Signature
- GIbson Les Paul Goldtop or Studio Wine Red
- Fender Standard Telecaster
- Gibson 7-string Explorer
@Gilbert Zala - Yeah, I know, man. I also would think of at least 10 more basses/ guitars I would like to get. But those I listed are also off the top of my head.
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention my previous guitar. It was an Epiphone Les Paul Special II (just sold it). Good enough to begin learning, but now I'm kinda beginner-intermediate, going more and more towards intermediate, I needed a more versatile guitar. Hence, the SG.
@ Ivan - I know Squier Affinity are basically stringed garbage. But what would you think about a standard Squier Tele (I tried one who was about 0 Canadian, and wasn't that bad IMHO)? Although I think I'd rather spend a few more to get a MIM Fender Standard Tele... probably it's way better, but I haven't tried either Squier nor Fender guitars. But is it worth the extra money?
@ OU812 - Thanks, man. It's good to know one doesn't have to break the pocket to get a decent guitar. I will consider the Classic Vibe Tele for a next guitar.
@ EVERYONE - Thanks for your replies. I might add some of your choices to my own wishlist. Since there is not "right" or "best" answer for this question, I can't choose one, so I'm gonna put this in voting soon.

			QUESTION:
who knows where i can get drums and bass guitars on sale?
where i can get them for different colors.plus accesories

				ANSWER:
Ebay is good, but I would only deal with dealers with a very high rating and protect yourself with a credit card. Paypal is almost worthless for protection (I got screwed before). Make sure that they have a return policy. Read the ads carefully for payments they take and make sure you've played the model that you want. Remember with ebay you're dealing with people so if you're nervous about sending money, search for people close to you and go check it out with your dad before the auction closes. Then they are happy because you can pay them cash. I've bought tons of stuff on ebay and with instruments, I've even resold them for a profit! Beware of off brand names, they say Stratocaster, but it's not a fender and plays more like a blender. Notice the condition carefully in the pictures, especially with used items.

Other than ebay. I like Musician's Friend. Safer than ebay and they take credit. They'll pay to return stuff if you're unhappy (not always with ebay). They have good sales and you can search by price for the accessories / instruments that you want. You can also search by manufacturer and look through their clearance section. I've sent several things back to them without a problem. If you don't mind "dinged" stuff they even have a scratch and dent section. They have tons of accessories under it's own catagory, plus they often have free shipping deals on many items.

Brands to consider which are inexpensive:
Dean, Switch, Daisy Rock (very cute), Takamine, and some Fender (Not the Chinese ones, go with Mexican or Japanese or USA). Some Epiphone are ok, but I'd play them individually (in person to check for quality issues). The main thing is to go with an instrument that feels comfortable to you and your body type. Kinda like dating, haha.

There are other sites out there; AMS and Guitar Center have good sites.

Peace,

Fretless Guitar - The Benefits And Cons Of Playing Such A Guitar

Author: yugo mendez

On the fretless guitar, the vibrating guitar strings comes through the bridge, from where the strings are secured, all the way to the spot where the fingertips presses the string upon the finger board.

These guitars are often uncommon in many western songs and typically limited to the electrified instruments as a result of the decreased volume.

Even so, the fretless bass guitar has obtained pretty huge reputation. Many kinds of bass guitar also come in fretless variations. Fretless Electric Bass is very popular among R&B, Jazz and Funk players due to the similarity in feel as well as sound to acoustic double bass.

Fretless Guitar is a close relative to slide guitar in a number of ways, with the fingertips taking the place of the slide. This type of guitar is generally interesting, yet they lack power as well as the catch.

Fretless guitars are not restricted with particular musical tunings, tuning systems which are the scenario with the other stringed instruments.

This makes it achievable to play music besides 12 tone scales; these scales are usually found in non-western or even experimental music.

Frets add a richer sound particularly to acoustic instruments, while the fretless acoustic guitar is kind of damped and creates considerably less vibration, creating a flatter or a muted sound.

			QUESTION:
Fretted or fretless acoustic bass?
Ive played for a while on an electric fretted bass guotar. Im buying an acoustic bass (not upright). I love the sound of a fretless, but i dont know if its much harder to play. Is it? Or should it be an easy transition?

				ANSWER:
Depends on your playing ability. If you're having to look down a lot while playing, you're still using the frets as a guideline to hit the right chords. But if you've pretty much got it down, it shouldn't be a problem. And Fretless basses are pretty badass!

			QUESTION:
I have a fretless acoustic bass. the strings smell extremely bad. any ideas on what to do?

				ANSWER:
Are they bronze strings? The acidity of the sweat in my hands used to cause bronze strings not only to smell bad, but oxidize as well. Try nickel strings.

			QUESTION:
How can I get a better acoustic tone from my stick bass?
I've got a Dean 4-string upright electric bass. The sound is great, but it's more like a fretless jazz tone than the real 'woody' acoustic tone of a double-bass. Any ideas what EQ or gear I can use to help give it a more natural sound? For one thing, I reckon the sustain is far too long when compared to an acoustic bass.

				ANSWER:
the SansAmp bass di/preamp has more tone control than most standard bass amps. With the SansAmp you should be able to adjust the gain to reduce the sustain while increasing the lo-mid range where the "woody" tone you desire possibly lives.

			QUESTION:
Going from fretted bass to fretless?
Okay, so I played a fretless bass (it was an acoustic though, I'll say) at a local music store yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I've been playing fretted bass for a while now, but I've always been interested in taking a turn in the fretless area.

It probably doesn't matter much, but I play mostly contemporary/alternative type music, with a bit of jazz and blues...no particular style.

My question is, what is the main difference of fretless? I didn't get much time with the fretless I played, plus is was acoustic so I couldn't tell much of a tone difference. So what's the big deal with fretless?

				ANSWER:
Each has its own particular voice. Fretless bass when played well, ie: in tune, can do pretty much everything a fretted bass can do. Fretted bass, in general, is easier since you don't really have to worry about intonation, you hit the fret and the note speaks in-tune, assuming the guitar is set up properly.

Since fretted bassists are so common, here are some examples of fretless playing for you to listen to:
Jeff ament with Pearl Jam
Michael Manring
Steve Bailey

			QUESTION:
ibanez SR300 fretless bass info???
i wanted to get a my first fretless bass. i currently have a dean demonater 4 string electric and a dean playmate 5 string acoustic. i was looking at the ibanez SR300F because of the price and look but my cuzon has an ibanez that wont stop rattling. i was also thnking if i dont get the ibanez i would get the stagg BC300 natural semigloss. i was wondering if anyone had experince with the ibanez or if the stagg is a better buy

				ANSWER:
Hey Mark:

I would definitely consider the Ibanez over the Stagg. I've played the Sr300f numerous times, and it is a well made instrument. You don't say what model of bass your cousin has. You also mention his "rattles". Has he taken the bass in to have it properly set up?? Has he changed gages of strings to where that was the cause of the "rattling"? Is it tuned so low that the strings "rattle" against the fretboard??? Things that I have just mentioned will make a 00.00 custom shop bass rattle.

I would have to say in the long run, the Ibanez would be a better buy. They have a great reputation, plus, the Soundgear basses are hard to beat. While Stagg does make some decent instruments here and there, I don't think they are as good of an instrument as Ibanez, and especially the one your looking at.

By owning 2 basses already, I assume you know how to play. If you feel the action is to low or high for your taste, insist that the store set it up. If it is a store such as Guitar Center, you might be out of luck on that. Suggestion: If you are planning on buying online, check out Sweetwater Music. EVERY guitar they ship out has been examined by one of their techs. If it has arrived to them set up improperly, they will adjust the neck and string height before they ship it out.

Hope this has helped, and good luck. Congrats on going fretless!

			QUESTION:
Shall i buy a fretless bass or a normal one?
the fretless one is only £7 more than the normal one, they are both electro acoustic,,, what ya think?

				ANSWER:
It depends... If you are just starting, you'll definitely want a normal one just because a fretless is much harder to play. If you already feel accomplished on regular bass, you might as well go with the fretless.

Ultimate Guitar Taylor Swift

However, there is such a thing as a fretless bass guitar, and trying to work out how such an instrument might work presents an interesting exercise in creative thinking.

Ultimate Guitar Taylor Swift

The answer is actually fairly simple - rather than pushing the string down against the raised fret, the string is pushed a little further and right up against the wood of the fret board itself. In many ways it is easy to imagine an electric bass guitar working in much the same way as a double bass - which of course has no frets, and is played by pressing the strings down against the fret board, or neck. In fact, in much the same way as an electric bass guitar can be compared to a double bass in playing style, the same can be said for the sound quality. A double bass produces a kind of 'mwaah' sound as the string buzzes against the wood of the neck. This same effect can be heard on an electric bass guitar, and the sound of the two instruments is very similarly in tone and voice.

Some of the early fretless bass guitars were created by performers simply buying inexpensive guitars and prising off the frets, but today fretless bass guitars are available quite easily, and they have been manufactured in number since the early 1960s.

Play EXISTING riffs and patterns with speed and accuracy click here

The fact that a fretless bass guitar has no defined note points means that players can include a wide range of effects and sounds, such as glissando - the gliding of notes, vibrato and also include notes between notes. Normally the finest change in note is from one semitone to the next - one fret to the next, but without these frets performers can play the notes in between - micro notes or quarter notes, creating any number of effects and sounds that add an unusual quality to music.

Often to help performers fret lines are drawn on the neck so that it is at least possible to see where the notes are, rather than having to rely entirely on habit and judgement. Alternative methods include notches on the neck that can be felt, markings on the neck and other such ways to aid the performer.

As well as aiding the performer it is necessary to aid the instrument, as the pressure of the metal strings against the wooden neck can cause harm and damage. For this reason either or both of two options are used. One method is to use flat wound strings, so that the string lies flat rather than curved and abrasive, and the other method is to use an epoxy resin on the neck to increase its durability and strength.

Most fretless bass guitars have the standard four strings, although there are five and even six string fretless guitars available. For the demanding player it is possible to purchase boutique, or custom made fretless guitars which have an even higher number of strings.

			QUESTION:
fretless bass guitar lessons?
I have a fretless bass guitar and no idea how to play. I have no experience whatsoever but I'm eager to learn. Can anyone help me out?

				ANSWER:
Not many people start off on the fretless bass ; most people learn on the standard fretted bass and later make the switch. But this should not present too many problems for you

Do you have "fret" markers on the fingerboard or is the fingerboard a plain piece of ebony, perhaps with some dots up the side of the neck ?

I strongly advise you to get some lessons for the first 12 months just to get you started. After that you may feel competent enough to keep teaching yourself.

You could start off by learning the notes on the fingerboard and playing some scales.

EDIT : Do not learn TABS ; learn how to read standard musical notation. Buy a few books at your music store.

			QUESTION:
What is the best fretless bass guitar out there, and what websites would you recommend?
The bass needs to be somewhat affordable. Under 1k is preffered.
I'm looking mostly for recomendations and websites with good selections. Canadian shipping is preferred.

				ANSWER:
Well of course you can't buy the best bass of any kind for under 00 (new). But you can still get one that will make you real happy.

If you play up the neck a lot and need to sound like Jaco you need an American Fender Jazz. But my favorite is the Warwick Corvette Standard because it's deep and dark like a bass should be.

For websites I like Musician's Friend though most of the big boys price alike. But you should check around for used ones too, because a lot of players buy a fretless and then don't wind up playing it much because it doesn't fit their style or skill.

			QUESTION:
Should i get a fretless bass guitar?
I'm Looking for a project to keep me busy because i have a lot of free time on my hands. So i decided to try my hand at building an electric bass guitar. Since putting in frets requires a ton of precision, i decided to go for a fretless bass. Do you think it's worth building? is it really that hard to play?

				ANSWER:
Not really hard to play. A lot of fretless basses have some sort of marker so you know where the frets would be, like a line on the fretboard or side of the neck. I've never played a fretless bass, but they're pretty cool. They do sound different than a fretted bass though - this is because fretless basses are almost always strung with flatwound strings, while fretted basses are generally strung with roundwound strings (though flatwounds can be used too) - roundwounds damage the finish on a fretless fretboard.

			QUESTION:
What are the differences between a maple fretboard and a rosewood fretboard on a fretless bass guitar?
What are the differences in sound, feel, playability?

				ANSWER:
well as for the sound there really isn't any difference, but for playability one has a smoother surface than the other which has an effect on how the strings slide up and down within a fret, the maple has a smoother feel usually than a rosewood fretboard, I play guitar, I have 2 electrics, one has a maple fretboard, the other has a rosewood, and I like them both, the playing feel is great for both as well, but the maple is smoother especially for string bending. It is the same for bass guitar, I have played bass's with both types of fretboard's and I got the same play response from both as with regular 6 string guitars. hope I have helped you.

			QUESTION:
what's the difference between fretless and fretted bass guitar?
as far as sound, techniques, and principles are concerned?
for a beginner, would you recommend a fretless bass? gracias!

				ANSWER:
simple frets are a guide on whare to place your fingers, frets are verry handy espesialy when reading bass tab. fretless bass guitars are much much harder to play becouse you need 2 know whare to place your finger without the aid of frets. fretless bass guitars make a lovely ringing noise when you slide your finger down them and are much easier to play slap basss bithout that annoying scrappy noise when you acidentally hammer on one of the metal frets. if you are a biginner i highly recoment a freted guitar fretless is nice but you need 2 know your frets off by heart

			QUESTION:
If I file down the frets of my bass guitar into the fret board will it sound like a normal fretless bass?
Will it mess with the intonation or anything? Or will it just feel like a normal fretless bass?

				ANSWER:
Don't file the frets. Ply them out and fill the holes with wood putty. Then cover the fret board in wood varnish 3 times. And finally a thin coat of epoxy. I did this to my squier p bass and then added a jazz pickup. Sounded sweet.

			QUESTION:
How do you play a fretless bass guitar?
Do you place your fingers on the fret markers or in between them like there are frets? Also will using round wound strings damage the fretboard?

				ANSWER:
I play fretless.

Put your fingers between the dots, just as if there was a fret there. You must train your ear to hear the note for you can not see it.

My fretboard is lined with maple strips, but it still needs a sense of hearing to get the note perfect.

Use tape wound or flat wound strings.
GHS 3060 tape wound. Very very nice.
Thomastic JF344 Flats. AWSOME strings.

round wounds will eat your fretboard to snot in the long run. Flat wound are you best bet.

some flats have higher tension then others.
the JF344 play like butter.
They cost , but are the best that you can get.
www.juststrings.com has them for .
they have the GHS 3060 for .
These strings last forever.

			QUESTION:
What strings to buy for a fretless bass guitar?
I purchased a Rogue LX200BF Series II Fretless Bass Guitar yesterday from musicians friend and noticed several scratches on the fretboard after playing on it for about 10 minutes. The scratches were caused from the factory strings, and this bothered me because the guitar is brand new and I don't want scratches to accumulate over time on the guitar's fretboard, especially since it is a fretless bass. What type of strings should I purchase that will not scratch the fretboard? If any string will scratch the fretboard, will this effect the sound overtime since the guitar is fretless? I have thought about purchasing some flatwound strings as opposed to the roundwounnd strings. Are there any bass strings that are cloth-wound or a similar non-metallic string? It is an inexpensive model, but I would like to keep the fretboard smooth.

				ANSWER:
The ONLY strings used on a fretless bass are:Flatwound strings. Those scratches are from the more commonly used Roundwound strings. Flatwound strings are not used much these days so you might have to search around for them.

			QUESTION:
where to find a squier vintage fretless?
does anyone know where i can find a squier vintage modified fretless jazz bass for cheap?

				ANSWER:
hey there is an online place that is called guitar world that handles alot of squier guitars. my sister works there and they usually have lots of cheap guitars. hint if u buy lots of stuff u usually get discounts.

			QUESTION:
This is to the people who have hollow body electric basses?
have you ever play a fender Squier Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz Bass how does it compare with a hollow body bass?

is a fender squier better than the Ibanez AFB200 Electric Hollow Body Bass?

And can you get frets removed if i bought one?
Thank you.

				ANSWER:
You can get the AFB200 as a fretless (AFB200F) - that would be the way to go. You can remove the frets and use filler in the gaps on a fretted neck, but it's never as good as a solid fretless neck. The Squire is OK, but if you want a hollow body, go with the Ibanez.

			QUESTION:
Electric Or Acustic Bass Guitar?
I bought a cheap electric bass Fender Squier from a Pawn store but it turned out that the pick-ups are bad so I am looking for another guitar...

I really like the acustic/electric basses out there but wanted to check and see what are the advantages of the electric bass guitars compared to an acustic/electric...

And to take my question even further - what about a fretless bass? Anyone played with one and what are the advantages/disadvantages to a regular bass guitar?

Thank you,

				ANSWER:
Acoustic basses (the ones that look like guitars, not upright basses) are not very useful in acoustic situations because there bodies just aren't big enough for the proper bass frequencies. They just sound like an acoustic 6 string guitar but with less volume, and when amplified feedback making a huge humming sound. Plus the pick-ups in acoustic basses are not the best for bass frequencies so you many times need a preamplifier which costs 100+ to get it to sound decent.

I've been playing bass for 17 years and think acoustic basses(guitar basses) are the worst concept I've seen so far. Pretty much any 100 dollar electric bass sounds better with a little bass amp than a 3,000 dollar acoustic bass guitar, I'm not exaggerating.

As far as fretless you don't need to play fretted first, but there is a much longer learning curve and fretless basses are no way near as versatile as fretted basses.

				ANSWER:
I had an Ibanez SRF400FL unlined fretless for 13 years. Great bass, although I did sell it in favor of a fretless Jazz bass. Please don't buy a Squire. They are crap. At least buy a Mexican Jazz.

			QUESTION:
I want a Geddy Lee sounding bass tone.?
But when i tried some basses at guitar center the one that sound the most like it was a squier vintage modified squier. The 70s reissue bass sounded the next most like it then his signature bass. I find that the Geddy signature was the easiest to play but didn't get any of that growly tone. The 70 was in between and the fretless sounded just like it.

				ANSWER:
Try a Rickenbacker 4001 or 4003. And run into a P.A. system with a DI, no amp.

And also, Lee's Jazz Bass seems to have been incorrectly re-wired at one point, giving it it's tone.

Flamenco Guitars and Strings

Author: Sal Bonavita

Do you need a special type of guitar?

The simple answer is No! For a beginner, any (nylon stringed) classical guitar will do the job.

Having said that, there are 2 points of confusion that are worth mentioning. They may seem obvious to most people, but I'm here to tell you they are not obvious to everyone.

1) Any guitar with steel strings on it is NOT suitable. There was a time when certain styles of Country and Western and jazz guitars were advertised as "Spanish guitars" for some unknown reason. (I think because they have roughly the same shape as a classical / flamenco guitar). If you look hard enough you may even find a few books of the 1920's , 30's, and 40's which have plectrum style music for these "Spanish guitars". The equation seems to be: Flamenco = Spanish music = let's play it on my grandpa's Spanish guitar. Now where did he put those plectrums? Or something like that.

2) Another common misconception is that the bass strings on a classical guitar are steel. On the outside they look the same as their steel brothers but that's where the similarity ends. Classical guitar bass strings have many fine strands of nylon woven together inside the copper winding. If you look closely you will see these strands poking out of the end of the string.

3) The action needs to fairly low without producing excessive string buzz.

4) A solid wood top produces a better tone than a factory laminated wood guitar.

5) A tapping plate (golpador) needs to be attached on the top of the guitar. Genuine flamenco instruments already have these but any decent guitar repair shop or Luthier can stick one on for you. Right hand tapping techniques can certainly damage the guitar if this protection is not there.

6) Flamenco guitars are generally lighter in construction. I personally don't like heavy guitars. For me a guitar must feel comfortable and "user friendly". Heavy wood guitars like some classical guitars don't do it for me.

7) When I was learning I bought cheap guitars only. Mainly because I could not afford to pay 0 or more for a expensive hand made guitar by a respected luthier. That doesn't mean a second hand non-flamenco factory made guitar is no good. For example, I think Yamaha makes good beginner classical guitars that are more than suitable for learning flamenco with an attached golpe plate. I was pretty rough on my guitars so I never got precious about an instrument. When my guitar needed replacing, I just visited the local second hand guitar shop and spend an hour trying out different classical style guitars. A guitar does not have to be expensive; it just needs to "speak to me". What I mean is that it needs to feel comfortable and have a strong tone.

One consideration that I think is important is whether the strings maintain good tone even if they are fairly worn. This has more to do with the guitar than the strings themselves. That's why trying old guitars in a second hand shop is a good idea if you just want a cheap beginners instrument. I would try those with worn strings first. The problem is that many guitars sound all terrific and sparkly with band new shiny strings but quickly lose their tone after a few days.

Strings - Which brand? What tension?

A brand of strings that suit one guitar may not suit another. The best way to determine which is best for your guitar is through experiment. Some popular brands are Savarez, La Bella, Augustine and D'Addario. If you're not sure about tension choose normal tension.

Extending string life

1) Bass strings will naturally wear as a result of contact with the fret wires. Before this wear becomes excessive, loosen the string and pull it through the hole at the saddle about a centimeter or so. The idea is to shift the worn section so it appears over the spaces between the frets when you tighten it back up again.

2) Reverse the bass strings when they become worn so that you end up with a fresh section over the sound hole.

3) Use a cloth impregnated with lemon oil before and after playing.

Brighten up dull strings

1) Perspiration on the hands may dull the resonance in the bass strings. If this occurs, loosen the strings and tighten them up again.

2) Another, more radical method is to wipe the tightened string with a cloth soaked in methylated spirits. Lift the string a couple of centimeters at the 12th fret and let it slap back to the finger board. This should loosen and shake some of the gunk out of the strings.

Changing strings

It is always a good idea to change the strings one at a time in order to maintain a constant tension on the neck and bridge. Tune each new string up to concert pitch before removing the next old one.

			QUESTION:
Battle of the Bass... the 5 greatest Bassist's in Metal.......?
As a bassit, great bass playing is obviously near and dear to my heart. It is also often overlooked, because even in Metal all too many bands view the bass as just something to add a little heaviness to the drums or rhythm guitars, instead of a voice capable of screaming out on it's own.

I've compiled a list of the 5 Bassists I personally consider the best in Metal. 3 play to this day, 2 have fallen. You may not agree, and that is fine, there will be room for you to address my stupidity in this.

1) Roger Patterson (ATHEIST)
-Not only one of the most innovative Metal bassists ever on pure technical merit, but also the prime songwriter for the albums Piece of Time and Unquestionable Presence. Atheist being one of the few Metal bands ever where the albums were written around the bass and drums first, and the guitars were brought in to compliment them. Undoubtedly the founding father of Progressive/Tech Death Metal.... died on February 12, 1991in a car wreck.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCnEL3u6azI

2) Jeroen Paul Thesseling (PESTILENCE/ OBSCURA)
-Probably the least known, yet most accomplished on this list. Dutch born and Conservatory, Jeroen started to study microtonality and developed a 72-tone equal temperament bass. Between stints with Pestilence and OPbscura, also played in many Fusion and Flamenco groups. Plays 6 string fretless Warwick basses almost exclusively.

3) Steve DiGiorgio (SADUS/ DEATH/ TESTAMENT/ ICED EARTH and a lot more)
- A bit of a hired gun in the Bass World. Is known not only of his mastery of Jazz, but also for the diverse range of Metal styles, from Thrash to Death to Black he can play. Yet another musician better known by the Bands than the fans.

4) John Myung (DREAM THEATER)
- The Yngwie Malmsteen of Bass. Berklee trained, is well versed in Slap, Jazz, Rock and Metal bass. Is a bit of a virtuoso who would be ranked higher if Dream theater were more consistent in writing actual songs, instead of showing off with solo after solo. Still his raw technical skill cannot be denied.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHHAKiLIboc&feature=related (cover)

5) Cliff Burton (TRAUMA/ METALLICA)
- The Seminal Thrash Bassist. The least formally educated of all on this list, and yet, probably the one most responsible for inspiring legions of young Metalheads to pick up bass guitars.. because he made them sound as cool as regular guitars. Had a background in Classical, Jazz and Rock, but was self taught as a bassist. While not as Technical as some other bassists, he is still known for having possibly the most unique style and tone in Metal, one that is instantly distinguishable from any other bassist. (The other such player being another self taught rebel named Steve Harris, of Iron Maiden fame) RIP September 27, 1986.

Honorable mentions go to Rob Trujillo (His infectious Grooves stuff is legend) Steve Harris (IRON MAIDEN), Tony Choy (CYNIC) and Geddy Lee (RUSH)

MQ- Thoughts and Opinions ( I expect to get fully raped by Dream Theater Noobz for not calling Myung the best evah, but tough)?

MQ2- Who did I miss? Give me YOUR top 5 greatest Metal bassists of all time? And WHY.
yeah... can tell most folks around here never have really listened to or played bass.

				ANSWER:
MA: Looks like you went with a more technical viewpoint. As I don't know much (alright, anything!) about the bass, so I really can't comment fairly on your list. I like the bands the bassists you mentioned are in and I guess the bass has something to do with that.

MA2: I'm going to take a different approach. Instead of choosing the bassists based on their technical power, I will go with catchy and memorable basslines instead.

5. Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse)
Now, CC gets a lot of unfair hatred (from the mainstream and the underground) but most people will agree that the musicians are pretty talented. Again, I don't know anything about bass, so I wouldn't know whether Webster is really talented or not but I do know that he has written some kickass catchy basslines and that's all that matters.

4. Frank Bello (Anthrax)
Anthrax has some of the most memorable basslines in metal thanks to this guy. The crunchy feel he adds to the songs is just priceless.

3. XXX (Otargos)
*Gasps*! A black metal bassist in a top 5 metal bass list. Have a hunch that he's technically proficient as well and unlike most BM bassists, he makes himself apparent in the songs and leaves me wanting more of his extreme but catchy bass moments.

2. Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
The godfather of catchy metal basslines. Of course bassists from earlier metal bands had put out some catchy bass moments but due to this guy many metal songs are based around catchy basslines. Also, the first person to make me 'air bass' (yes I made that up). I don't think I even need to post links.

1. *drum roll* Yenz Leonhardt (Stormwarrior)
Probably a weird choice for a number one spot as he has only worked on one full length album with the band i.e Heading Northe. However, imho, he took the Steve Harris style and perfected it, even if he isn't as apparent as Harris. Made the bass an even more integral and catchy part of the songs. Killer basslines for a killer band. The youtube quality might not let you appreciate his basslines properly but anyways...

			QUESTION:
Who uses a fretless bass guitar?
These must be difficult to play. Somewhat like a violin, or a cello, to be more accurate. I wonder if anyone ever played a fretless lead-6 string guitar. Anyone out there know?

				ANSWER:
I've got a fretless 4-string bass, and it's difficult to play in tune without lots and lots of practice, which I don't have time for - I love the sound and playability of my Soundgear 5-string fretted bass too much to take time away from it for the fretless. As the other responders have indicated, Flea, Tony Levin, Les Claypool, & Vic Wooten have all played fretless bass from time to time.

I've heard of 1 or 2 guys who play fretless guitar - has got to be fiendishly difficult to play well.

			QUESTION:
Who are your top 3 LIVING Bass Players in Metal?
And Why?

Mine are:
STEVE HARRIS (IRON MAIDEN)
-If I really have to explain this.. you don't know bass. Self-taught, founder of one of the top 3 most influential Metal bands of all time. Invented a whole new style with his galloping bass triplets. and does it all on a plain jane Fender 4 string P-bass.. the least "Metal" of any bass.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJFBFovXI04

JEROEN PAUL THESSELING (Obscura, Pestilience)
- developed a 72-tone equal temperament bass, and plays a 6 string fretless Warwick. And unlike most multi-string players.. actually uses them all... all the time.

JOHN MYUNG (Dream Theater)
-Virtuoso bass player, who has used a number of high end basses, along with the Chapman Music stick. Berklee College of Music trained.. my only knock is sometimes like most of Dream Theater.. seems to have musical ADHD.

Myung being the only one of them to help me out by doing clinics and stuff.......

MQ- Thoughts on my choices......
MQ2- YOUR picks?

BQ- Overrated living bass players? (*coughFLEAcough*)

and yes.. this might have been inspired by some nit making a post about bass being "so easy to play".
@Shred Doc.. did you HAVE to remind me he was no longer with Hibria? He was a large part of what I loved about their sound.

				ANSWER:
MA: Steve Harris - What can i say about this guy? He has been the constant force in Maiden's music and direction. He does most of the composing work of Maiden's music. And yeah, certainly one of the best bass players, in metal at least.

Thesseling - Very talented bass player. Complex style. I find quite a bit of jazz influences in quite a bit of his playing. Can't comment much more though. Haven't heard his stuff with that much detail.

John Myung - My pick of your three. Amazing talent. Just to keep synchronization with Petrucci and Portnoy would be a nightmare for most bass players. Some of the best fills i have heard come from his bass guitar. Add to that the extreme speed and technical brilliance. But as you said DT's music does not appeal to everyone. :p

MA2: Since this discussion isn't restricted to metal bass players, i would pick:
Billy Sheehan
Victor Wooten
Geddy Lee

BA: i don't know who to nominate for this one. Bass players as it is are not given due credit. So over rated is not something i would call any bass player. As for Flea, true he is not 'the best' bass player by any means. But he is a very good bassist in my opinion. Very talented, maybe not the best technically, but good nonetheless.

			QUESTION:
Which bass should I buy?
I have been playing bass for 2.5 years(I would like to think I'm good), and I’m starting to get bored with both of my 4 string fretted basses ( Ibanez GIO , Peavey USA Fury), so I am looking at 2 "cheapish" basses from SX. As far as music I play anything, but most of the bands that I play in are Metal/Hardcore.

First: A 6 string: http://www.rondomusic.com/product2884.html
and
Second, A 6 string fretless: http://www.rondomusic.com/z6tbluefl.html

I am leaning toward the fretless, because i love fretless tone and Im very much into bands like primus and obscura, but I'm worried that it would be to much of a jump to switch to fretless and add 2 strings at the same time.
So my question is, which bass do you think would better suit my desires?

Bass Guitar: the Anchor of a Band

Author: quinlanmurray

A bass guitarist/bassist is like the anchor of a band. He/she outlines the harmony of the music being performed, while simultaneously indicating the rhythmic pulse of it. The bass guitarist is like the lifeblood of any band, and the bass guitar is his/her tool of choice, used to mesmerize audiences.

A bass guitar is a bass stringed instrument that is played with the fingers. It can be played by plucking, slapping, tapping, popping, or by picking the strings with a pick. The bass guitar looks somewhat similar to an electric guitar, but with a larger, heavier body, a longer scale length, and a longer neck. The bass guitar usually has four strings, tuned one octave lower in pitch than the four lower strings of a guitar.

Bass guitars are large in size, and considerably heavier in weight than

electric guitars. As such, the bodies of bass guitars need to be made of lightweight materials so that the weight is manageable. If a bass guitar was made of metal, chances are that a lot of guitarists would find it difficult or even impossible to play it. The preferred materials are wood and graphite. Different kinds of wood may be used, including maple, alder, mahogany, rosewood, etc. The strings are usually made of steel.

Frets are raised metal strips inserted into the fingerboard that extends along the full width of the neck of the guitar. On a fretted bass guitar, these strips divide the fingerboard into segments that emit similar tones, called semitone segments. Fretless basses also exist. However, these have a distinct, unique sound, as the strings must be pressed down directly on the wood of the fingerboard. Fretless basses are somewhat lighter in weight, but many musicians prefer fretted basses, because they say it gives them greater control over the music quality.

Bass guitars are made to deliver loud pitches of sound. Hence, these can never be of acoustic type. Only an amplifier, and a good set of speakers plugged into the guitar can give the majestic bass guitar its true, deep sound. A bass guitar is heavy and cumbersome to carry around, because of all the supporting gadgets that come with it, not to mention the long cables that accompany all of the gadgets.

Bass guitars are expensive to purchase, and also tough to learn. But these are indispensable in any pop or rock band. A bass guitar can indeed be the most prized possession of a devoted bassist.

			QUESTION:
Fretless basses!!!?
I'm planning on converting my old fretted 4 string bass, into a fretless. I've been doing a lot of research and don't know whether I should do a varnish finish or a wood epoxy finish. Which would you recommend? Links would help, thank you.

				ANSWER:
Varnish would be my choice, It allows the quality of the wood to come through in the sound of the bass. Epoxy is a "plastic" and that sound comes through when you play.

			QUESTION:
what are the main diffrences between fretted and fretless basses? for example, sound, neck feel, etc.

also, what do you recommend? i am a bass player with around 5 years under my belt, and play all styles (i in particular love weird and extra low tunings, such as drop A#) - but would love to start learning jazz bass.

thanks!

				ANSWER:
a fretted bass has frets, a fretless bass doesn't lol. a fretless bass has a warmer sound to it, but is more difficult to play because there are no guidelines as to where you should put your fingers, which fretted ones have (you know, the frets). to me, the fretless bass is more fun to play, and sounds nicer. also, it's a lot smoother as you move your fingers up and down the fretboard

On a fretless bass are the notes in the same spots as if it were a fretted bass? Also what are the advantages to not having frets?

			QUESTION:
How to play a fretless bas guitar?
I'm not planning on learning this, I can play a little bass but I think it would be a waste learning how to do it without frets. I'm simply curious, how do people know what note they're hitting if they can't see the divisions? What's the point of playing without frets anyway? I didn't even know that fretless basses existed until I read about a jazz-fusion bass player on wikipedia who didn't use frets.

				ANSWER:
fretless guitars produce a different sound as opposed to normal bass guitars, because the fingertip is relatively soft (compared to a fret) and absorbs energy from the vibrating string much faster.

It is really for the much more experienced bass players. you need to know exactly where the notes would be as if it was fretted

Fretless Guitars – Bass Guitars

To the serious bass guitarist the option of using a fretless bass guitar increases their performance and sound. They know the importance of having the ability to slide their fingers down the neck of the bass guitar without having to use the metal spacers for the perfect cord. The fretless bass guitar takes the playing experience to a new and more enjoyable level.

The bass guitarist will have to learn to adjust to not having the metal spacers on the neck of the guitar or fret. This takes time and experience yet ask any guitarist and they will proudly state they would not return to a fretted neck.

There are different types and models of the fretless bass guitar. Some of the popular models are:

1. Tanglewood Fretless Bass

2. Peavey Foundation Fretless Bass
